The President of the Bundesbank, the German central bank, today expressed concern at the advance of the far right in Germany, because he felt it would not contribute to attracting investment to the country.

“ ANDi am concerned”, said Joachim Nagel, at a press conference in Berlin after the meeting of the European Central Bank Council (ECB), when asked about the outcome of the regional elections in Saxony-Anhalt (east of Germany), where the far right got an overwhelming victory.
“This is not how investors are attracted to this country,” the President of the Bundesbank added.
The ECB held its meeting a few days after the far-right Alternative Party for Germany (AfD), which initially opposed the euro and the rescue of some euro area countries, achieved an overwhelming victory in the regional elections of the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt.
With almost 44% of the votes, three seats of the absolute majority, it is possible for AfD to govern a German region for the first time, at a time when Germany, one of the pillars of the European project, has to implement economic reforms, as the countries of southern Europe had to do 15 years ago.
