“ Money support for each family has already been identified and is being processed in the accounts, worth 100,000 escudos (907 euros)”, said the mayor of São Filipe, Nuías Silva, in statements to journalists, adding that support is attributed according to the number of victims of each family.

“ These support is not by families, it is by victims ", clarified the mayor, explaining that a family with two or three victims will receive the support corresponding to each one.

In addition to financial support, basic baskets have already been distributed to families and psychological monitoring is being provided through the crisis office, in conjunction with the City Council and the Government.

The people transferred to the city of Praia have accommodation and meals guaranteed in a space close to the Hospital Agostinho Neto, where they continue to receive follow-up.

The City Council and the Government are also preparing measures for the recovery of affected families, including interventions in their homes and the creation of income-generating activities.

According to the mayor, the projects should be completed to be implemented with families after the first month of mass of the victims, respecting the mourning period.

With regard to funerals, Nuías Silva said that all the ballot boxes had already been purchased and that the House exempted families from paying for the graves, which will be attributed on a perpetual basis.

The municipality also intends to proceed with a project for the construction of graves in granite or marble, to preserve the memory of the victims.

“ As much as we can intervene, we cannot rescue the lives of these people, but we can help minimize the suffering of the people who survived and remember the memory of those who left ", he said.

“ This is our mission: to help mitigate the suffering of those who survived and families who lost their loved ones and remember the memory of those who died ", concluded.

The mayor considered the survival of some passengers a “true miracle” and defended tributes to the victims and those involved in the rescue.

Nuías Silva also proposed that September 5 become a date of reflection on road safety and prevention and revealed that a monument is being considered at the scene of the accident, with the names of the victims, as well as tributes in the cemetery where they were buried.

The accident occurred on Saturday in Campanas de Cima, in the municipality of Santa Catarina do Fogo, when the bus left the road and fell about 50 meters by a ravine.

25 people died and 13 were injured.

Most of the victims were students and young people.

The Cape Verdean government has decreed two days of national mourning.

Medical, emergency and psychological support teams have been moved to the island of Fire, as work continues to determine the circumstances of the accident.

The Cabo Verde Roads, a public company responsible for managing the national road network, is on site to assess the road conditions.
