Carneiro solidarity with demonstrators says it is available for solutions

O socialist secretary-general, José Luís Carneiro, today expressed “solidarity to those in the squares” to manifest themselves by the right to have a house, and recalled the party’s willingness to find solutions.

In his speech at the opening of the Municipal Convention of the Port District of the PS, the socialist leader stated that “equal opportunities are measured in various policies and the results of their policies. Among them, the right to have a house”, refusing that “it is a luxury”.

“ It is about having something that allows us to accomplish as people, as human beings. And there are numbers, there are data that impress us: 18% of young Portuguese people, since this government took office, are living in shared houses ", said José Luís Carneiro.

On the day that demonstrations for the right to housing take place in the country, José Luís Carneiro expressed “solidarity to those who are in the squares, in the villages of this country, to manifest themselves for a fundamental right, the right to have a house, which means the right to a more dignified life”.

Since taking office as Secretary-General of the PS, he said, he sent “five communications to the Prime Minister, one of them had to do with the subject of housing”, refusing, therefore, the accusation that only now the PS woke up to the problem.

“ From the first hour, he told the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, that the leader of the PS was available to build short- and medium-term solutions, but also structural solutions for the future of the younger generations, for the middle classes and for the safety of the older people living in the big cities,” he insisted.

Faced with accusations, by the majority, that the PS has responsibilities in the housing crisis, José Luís Carneiro replied that “everyone, of course, in society, has responsibilities”, but pointed out the measures adopted by the party when it was government in this area.

“ It is due to the PS in the Government the National Housing Strategy, the contractualization with the municipalities of 250 local housing strategies and the construction of more than 30,000 housing or requalification of housing, which took funds from the recovery and resilience plan ", said.

“ Of course, we are not satisfied with what has been done. Much needs to be done for the next generation. We will have to have a strategy for 10 years for housing policy”, continued José Luís Carneiro, on the project that has in the mayor of Matosinhos, Luísa Willow the coordinator.
