M300,000 people have been displaced in Yemen due to the intensification of clashes in the west of the country — with the vast majority of these movements taking place in the last two months — the UN announced today.

In a statement, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) calls for “all parties involved in the conflict to protect civilians and humanitarian workers, and to ensure safe and unimpeded humanitarian access, especially in areas of difficult access to Taiz”.

“ After years of conflict, families in Yemen are forced to flee again, often taking only the clothes of the body,” said Abdusattor Esoev, head of the IOM mission in Yemen.

“They urgently need shelter, food, drinking water and medical care. Without further funding, thousands of families are in danger of running out of the help they desperately need,” he added.

Yemen plunged again into the war last July, after four years of relative calm, dragged by the conflict in the Middle East.

The hostilities intensified last September, following a Hutis offensive — aligned with Iran — in the west of the country, which allowed them to strengthen control over Bab el-Mandeb's narrow strategic, linking Europe to Asia via the Suez Canal.

Since then, Saudi Arabia, allied with the Yemeni Government, has regularly bombarded the Hutis positions, which respond by intensifying attacks on Saudi territory.

The fighting has led to a rise in commodity prices. In the city of Taiz, in the west of the country, the cost of essential goods tripled or even five times, due to the fights that hinder the supply from the neighboring areas, according to the IOM.

Five OIM mobile medical teams work in four provinces (Marib, Lahj, Aden and Taiz).

In view of the increased humanitarian needs, the IOM estimates that 45 million dollars (EUR 40 million) will be needed in the next six months to provide vital assistance — including shelter, emergency financial assistance, healthcare, access to drinking water, sanitation and protection for displaced people.

Hutis conquer citadel and strategic positions in Lahj, Yemen

The Huthis rebels of Yemen conquered a citadel and other strategic mountain positions in the province of Lahj, after several days of intense fighting with pro-governmental forces, according to official sources.
