Uthe first project, worth 800 billion won (EUR 455 billion), will include four semiconductor plants – two built by giant Samsung Electronics and the other two by competitor SK hynix – as well as other infrastructure, said Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan.
Another project, valued at EUR 568 billion, provides for the construction of new data centres dedicated to AI, raising the country's total capacity to 10 gigawatts (GW), added Science Minister Bae Kyung-hoon at the same press conference.
This is the third mega-investment in AI announced in South Korea in less than a year, and by far the most significant.
The amount largely exceeds the 450 billion won (EUR 256 billion) promised by Samsung and the 125 billion won (EUR 71 billion) announced by Hyundai Motor at the end of 2025.
“Thanks to this, we will maintain an overwhelming leadership position in the market and a decisive technological advantage in the memory semiconductor sector”, said Kim Jung-kwan.
