O democratic leader in the U.S. House of Representatives, Hakeem Jeffries, announced today, in a letter to his colleagues on the bench, his candidacy for “change” to the presidency of the lower House of Congress, after the final Democratic victory in the mid-term elections.
Jeffries, who can become the first African-American president of the House of Representatives, appears as the clear favorite to take office and as early as Tuesday — in full counting of votes during the mid-term election day — received public support from former Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi.
'Against all expectations, Democrats in the House have achieved a consistent success, even though they are in a minority', wrote Jeffries in the letter. “Now, for the most part, we need to promote the significant change that the American people demand,” he said
During the campaign, Jeffries stressed that he intends to work on policies aimed at reducing the cost of living — measures that could raise broad support within the bench.
He even said that he would seek immediate votes to eliminate the tariffs imposed by Donald Trump's government, reverse the cuts promoted by Republicans in the Medicaid health care program and the Accessible Assistance Act (Obamacare).
He also promised a strict monitoring agenda, which includes investigations into Trump and his family, government and allies in the business sector.
The midterms represented a hard blow for the Republican Party, after the Democrats had achieved the most optimistic scenarios to gain control of the two chambers of Congress dose achieving historic victories in the race for governor in states such as Texas, Ohio or Georgia.
During Trump's first term (2017-2021), the House of Representatives, then controlled by the Democrats, approved two ‘impeachment’ charges against the Republican President, efforts that subsequently did not thrive in the Senate (high chamber).
Jeffries was part of the team of legislators who defended before the Senate the arguments of the first ‘impeachment’ case against the President in 2020.
After the victory, the politician welcomed the Democrats for the surprising result in the mid-term elections and said that the party will not seek “to settle accounts” with the American President and would rather “resolve the problems” of the citizens.
The new composition of the Congress will enable Democrats to influence budgetary policy and the adoption of legislation, as well as strengthening the supervision of the Republican administration.
