Asaudi Arabia and Syria signed agreements of EUR 360 million in the areas of military cooperation, infrastructure and housing, after a meeting in Riyadh between Syrian interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The agreement between the Syrian State and the Saudi Development Fund consists of a low interest loan that includes $100 million (EUR 89 million) for the health sector, specifically for the rehabilitation and equipping of damaged health centers after nearly 14 years of civil war.

Another 60 million dollars (EUR 53 million) will be spent on housing rehabilitation, covering 10,000 homes in a first phase, and USD 105 million (just over EUR 93 million) will be for civil protection.

The financing includes $90 million (EUR 80 million) for the rehabilitation of the Aleppo thermoelectric power plant in northern Syria and another $30 million (almost €27 million) for the development of drinking water systems in the capital, Damascus, and Idlib province in the northwest of the country.

To this amount, USD 18.6 million (EUR 16.5 million) is added for the digital transformation and modernisation of financial services, with the aim of creating more efficient and transparent institutions to support the country's recovery and stability, devastated by more than a decade of war.

The agreements were signed after an unannounced visit by Al Sharaa to the Saudi capital on Tuesday, the second one that carries out the Riyadh in a month, and among them “a cooperation agreement between the Ministries of Defense” of the two countries, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Syria.
