O belgian deputy Frédéric Erens, from the Flemish far-right party Vlaams Belang, was locked in the parliamentary bathroom all night. Only after 13 hours, on the morning of Wednesday, he was released – and sent to the hospital.
According to information disclosed by local mediaAt the end of a meeting, about 5:00 p.m. yesterday, Erens went to the bathroom before heading home. When I pulled the door, the lock broke.
Since you didn't have your cell phone with you and the regional parliament security rounds didn't go through that place... Frédéric Erens could only wait.
At VTM NIEUWS, the 58-year-old Member stressed that in order to facilitate oxygen circulation – since the doors are equipped with a fire extinguisher for safety reasons – it had to be a little... “MacGyver”.
“I had to play MacGyver and used a metal object I found to make two holes, one on top and one on the bottom, for oxygen to enter,” he said.
The adventure only ended at 6 a.m., when the cleaning crew entered the bathroom where Frédéric Erens was meeting. It was then necessary to use a crowbar to remove it from the site.
The Flemish Parliament, which is located in Brussels, will investigate the case.
