Hezbollah deputy admits that resistance against Israel has decreased

The deputy of the Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah, Hassan Ezzedine, today admitted that the “level of deterrence” of the so-called axis of resistance led by Iran has decreased since 2023, although he continues to struggle to prevent further progress from Israel.

“ Cwill the resistance today continue to reach the level of deterrence that existed before 2023 [when war began in Gaza]? I find it hard. Nothing is impossible, but it is not easy,” he said in a speech in Lebanon during a memorial service in honor of a deceased combatant of armed training.

“ I will be transparent and I will say frankly: we are currently facing a political crisis, but that does not mean that the enemy is calm. The enemy [Israel] is in crisis, the Americans are in crisis, and we in Lebanon are also facing a crisis,” he said.

However, he stressed that the resistance “continues to face this enemy to prevent it from expanding and advancing further.”.

He stressed that the Islamabad pact reached between the United States and Iran last June is “an understanding that should not be forgotten” because it significantly contributed to the reduction of attacks on leaders and fighters.

However, the Lebanese MP stressed that Israel “continues with its killings, destruction, aggression and bombings.”.

Then he asked, “What is the exit?”, answering: “We have to be realistic. The way out is Iran, to be honest.”.

On Friday, at least four people were killed in Israeli attacks southern Lebanon, today the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health indicated that there were wounded in another Israeli action in Bekaa, in the east of the country.

Ezzedine criticized the Lebanese government for the current talks – of which Hezbollah is not part – between Lebanon and Israel, mediated by the United States, the first in three decades.

“What have the Islamabad talks achieved? They brought Lebanon into the negotiations and they led to the ceasefire. Not the talks in Washington, not the direct negotiations, not the subsequent meetings in Rome. All your meetings didn't work. Honestly, this authority is deceived and stubbornly continues to insist on remaining allied with the United States, which does not even fully recognize it”, he condemned.

Lebanon was dragged by Hezbollah into the new war in the region by resumption of air strikes against Israeli territory in early March as a retaliation of the Israeli-American offensive against its Iranian ally.

Israel responded with intensive bombings in Lebanon and expanded the military positions it had already held in the south of the country since the previous conflict, causing more than 4,300 deaths and leaving over one million displaced, according to the Beirut authorities.

The parties had been in confrontation following the war in the Gaza Strip between October 2023 and November 2024, the date of a ceasefire never truly respected and interrupted with the beginning of the conflict between the United States, Israel and Iran.

The talks between the Lebanese and Israeli authorities led to the signing of a framework agreement at the end of June providing for the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from the territories they invaded, although on the condition that Hezbollah disarms.

Since then, Israel has continued to attack southern Lebanon, although violence has been significantly reduced.

The so-called axis of resistance, formed by political and armed groups supported by Iran, is composed of Hezbollah (Lebanon), Hamas (Ray of Gaza), Huthis (Yemen) and Shia militias in Iraq.
