O fire that broke out in Algodres Fornos was fought tonight by almost 500 operatives and maintained an active front, advanced source of Civil Protection, adding that two firefighters suffered minor injuries by inhalation of smoke.
Commander João Rodrigues, of the Subregional Command of Beiras and Serra da Estrela, reported that two firefighters suffered injuries tonight, by inhalation of smoke, and were transported to a hospital unit as a precaution.
On a balance sheet to the agency Lusa at 22:15, João Rodrigues explained that the fire that broke out on Monday in Fornos de Algodres, district of Guarda, and spread to the municipalities of Aguiar da Beira (Guarda) and Penalva do Castelo (Viseu), maintained an active front.
The active front tilled next to the settlement of Antas in a stony zone, with steep slope, which hinders the suppression work due to poor accessibility, detailed the same source.
“The dynamics is different now, until the afternoon [the fire] has been driven by the action of the wind and now [with the decrease] is giving us some opportunity for suppression, this will take place overnight,” said the commander of the Subregional Command of Beiras and Serra da Estrela.
João Rodrigues emphasized that due to the behavior of the wind, the fire had a large extension, above 10 kilometers.
The fire began at 22:50 on Monday in the locality of Maceira, in the municipality of Fornos de Algodres, spread, a few hours later, to the municipality of Aguiar da Beira, also in the district of Guarda, where it also burns in bush and pine, and, in the early morning, entered the municipality of Penalva do Castelo, district of Viseu.
According to the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC), by 22:30 the fire was fought by 476 operatives supported by 134 vehicles.
