A electronic Arts video game company announced today the closing of the studio BioWare, creator of sagas as “Baldur’s Gate”, “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic” or “Mass Effect”, in a restructuring that involves redundancies of about 400 people.

In a statement on “The Next Chapter of Electronic Arts”, signed by Co-Presidents Cam Weber and David Tinson, it can be read that the decisions now taken to establish “priorities, forms of work and portfolios” reflect a belief in the future of the company, recently acquired by the Public Investment Fund, Saudi Arabia, in a $55 billion (49 billion) business that involved Affinity Partners, Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.

“[Some decisions] open new exciting possibilities. Others are difficult, especially for people and teams by the company that are directly affected”, it can be read in the statement, which does not mention the number of workers affected.

Specialized publications, such as Bloomberg or Variety, have led to around 3% of the company's overall workforce, which means around 400, 50 of which at BioWare, which once employed hundreds of people.

In a separate statement, BioWare pointed out that “for more than 30 years it was more than a studio.”.

“ It was a house for narrators, ‘developers’, and for players who brought our worlds to life. ‘Baldur’s Gate’. ‘Neverwinter Nights’. ‘Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic’. Dragon Age. Mass Effect. ‘Anthem’. Now, after more than three decades of shared adventures, BioWare closes and the early development of the next project ‘Mass Effect’ ends”, says the studio.

In the text, the authors remember that “what generations of BioWare have built together is something to celebrate and remember”, when it comes to video games that have focused on players’ choices and passion for characters.

In social networks, the words of solidarity with BioWare workers and shared memories were multiplied.

The executive co-president of Polish CD Projekt Red was “very sad for the people affected, but also for seeing a legendary brand fall”, concluding, in a message on social network X: “It’s not a big day for the video game industry.”.
