Ntoday's meeting, Coreper discussed the renewal of the sanctions lists and failed to agree on the French request to withdraw the Alisher Usmanov oligarch in exchange for the release of prisoners in Azerbaijan.

According to the EU rotating presidency, work continues on Monday, “with the aim of reaching an agreement before the deadline of midnight on Tuesday”, said the same source.

If diplomats do not reach an agreement – which will have to be validated by the EU Council – the sanctions imposed on some 3,000 people and entities accused of favouring the Russian war effort against Ukraine lapse.

The sanctions regime is renewed every six months.
