A president of Mexico today considered that immigration raids and racism against Latin Americans in the United States probably influenced the outcome in favor of the Democratic Party in the mid-term elections on Tuesday.

“ Yes, it's very likely. I do not have the data, but it is logical to think that something that has influenced Latins with voting rights in the United States to vote now in the Democratic Party has to do with this racism and, at the same time, with the raids against people due to their skin color and ethnic origin,” said Claudia Sheinbaum at her usual morning press conference.

The Mexican leader thus responded when questioned about the possible relationship between the Immigration and Customs Control Service (ICE) operations and the election results, which gave the Democrats control of the two chambers of the United States Congress (Representatives Chamber and Senate).

According to data from the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 17 Mexicans died in the United States during operations or in custody of the ICE since 2025.

Sheinbaum stressed that some analyses indicate that Latin voters, including Mexican voters, who supported American President Donald Trump in 2024, have now opted for Democratic candidates.

These statements arise after an investigation by the United States organization revealed that 67% of Latin voters supported Democrats in the House of Representatives (low chamber) and that 17% of Hispanics who voted for Trump in 2024 have now supported Democratic Party candidates.

The survey identified increased cost of living and inflation as the main concerns of Latin voters, mentioned by 58%, while 27% pointed to immigration policies and the performance of the ICE.

On Wednesday, Sheinbaum had highlighted the victories of Mexican Democrats Xavier Becerra, elected governor of California, and Gina Hinojosa, who won the post of governor of Texas, and stated that the results reflected a “feeling of the American people.”.

California and Texas, the two most populous states in the United States, elected Latin governors for the first time in their history, a landmark in the electoral power of the Latin population.

Texas has 12.6 million Latinos, which represents 40.9% of the population, but had never had a Latin governor.

California has a Latin population of 15 million, representing 41% of the total, and had never elected a Latin governor, although in 1875 Romualdo Pacheco served as governor for ten months by appointment.

The new composition of Congress, which takes office in January, will allow Democrats to influence budgetary policy and the adoption of legislation, as well as strengthen the supervision of the Republican administration led by Trump.
