FC Porto and Estoril have a meeting for the beginning of Saturday night, at the Dragon Stadium, in which the objective of both is to ensure that, despite the difficulties they have been going through, over the last few weeks, they are ‘living’ in the fight for their goals set for the 2026/27 sports season.
The national champions in title do not lose sight of the ‘bi’ and arrive at the tenth day in the isolated leadership of the I League, with 27 points won in 27 possible, ‘packed’, yet, by the victory achieved, in the middle of the week, on the Academic of Viseu, by 1-0, which was worth access to the ‘final four’ of the League Cup.
However, the truth is that Francesco Farioli's men do not live the most 'inspired' of moments, in such a way that they no longer know what it is to win for more than the minimum margin for more than a month (more specifically since they received and beat the eternal rival, the Benfica, for 3-1).
Since then, they have added three triumphs (not only over the viriates, but also against Maritime, by 1-2, and Gil Vicente, by 0-1) and two defeats (both for the Champions League, before Real Betis, by 3-2, and PSV, by 0-1), making up a cycle of six goals scored and five suffered after the last five games.
The blues and whites know that, in case of victory, they will temporarily increase to eight points the advantage over the second ranked, the Benfica (which will only enter the scene, on Monday, against the Alverca, in the Stadium of Light), but, in the front, will have an opponent in complete ‘desperation’.
The canarinhos still do not know what it is to win in the new sport season of 2026/27 of the national championship, so they add only two points, which leaves them in the 18th and last place of the table, five away from the Ave River, a team that lives immediately above the ‘water line’ (and that will visit the Academic of Viseu).
The FC Porto-Estoril has an initial whistle scheduled for 8.30 p.m. (Hour of Continental Portugal) and will be judged by Miguel Nogueira, from the Lisbon Football Association, which will have as assistants Paulo Brás and Nuno Pires, as fourth referee Vítor Lopes, as VAR João Malheiro Pinto and as AVAR Pedro Sousa.
Coaches in direct speech
Francesco Farioli
First against the last class: “ We can't look at the table and believe that we're going to have an easy game tomorrow because, deepening the dice, the numbers say different things. At this point, with the change of coach, in the last two games, we had to prepare ourselves by watching some games of the sub-23, to understand a little of the style. We prepared for the unknown, because a change of coach is always like that, there is an increase in energy and tactical things for which cannot be prepared, because you do not control and do not know exactly where they can go”.
Praises of André Villas-Good: “ These are always words that make me happy and touch me, but here, there is no time to celebrate individual deeds, besides that this is a collective achievement. What we did in the last period and in this, after 27 points and nine victories, is something we deserved, but the next points will require our best version, with much work, quality and effort”.
Headache in front: “Of course, at the beginning of the time, everything was quite clear about the physical condition. The goal, from the beginning, has always been to put the three players on the same level, to try to have a correct energy management. We got a lot of games, and everybody's gonna get their chance. They are very smart players who can also play in different positions in a different structure.”.
Sérgio Raimundo
Estoril in trouble: “ We have to gain confidence with every game, and we're just gonna do it with daily work. I feel the players responding well and now it is up to us to turn this work of the week into results.”.
I League accounts: “ It's the last against the first. It is reality, it is the starting point, but it is not the point of arrival. We have the group together, no one wants to be in this situation, but we do not run away from what it is. We must have discipline and no excuses. We'll just get better with work and actions in the field. The competition starts every day of training and we want to find a constancy in our way of acting”.
Porto FC moment: “He is an opponent who never lost, suffers few goals and has enormous quality. We don't expect any facilities. We want to be competitive and that is to find solutions to any opponent. In a game of this dimension, some strategic nuances can be important and if players believe and go all the way, we can have a strong impact on the game.”.
