“ Dafter a year on the tragic accident in the Gloria elevator, which victimized several dozen people, including our colleague André Marques, Strup/Fectrans looks forward to the answers to the questions we asked the president of the Lisbon City Council (CML) and the Carris administration on 17 September 2025′′, pointed out the union in a statement sent to Carris workers, to which Lusa had access.

The derailment of the Gloria elevator took place on September 3, 2025, causing 16 fatalities and 24 injured from 15 different nationalities. Among the fatalities is Carris André Marques' guard, who was 40 years old and fathered two minor children.

“ It is true that the essential of the answers can only be answered by the final report of the official bodies, once again postponed, now for the next year, Strup/Fectrans must continue to put the chosen model, delivery to private maintenance of the elevator and lifts, as among the causes for the occurrence of this tragedy, which must be kept in mind so that they do not make the same mistakes again”, he said.

Among the various issues referred to the president of CML, Carlos Coins (PSD), and to the administration of the municipal company, the workers' representatives wanted to know whether an assessment had ever been made of the safety system of those equipment, whether the maintenance scheme had been changed taking into account the growth of passengers, or whether the decision to deliver maintenance to private individuals had any effect on a possible reduction in the quality of those works.

Next week, on the day when a year of the tragic accident is completed, the union will promote a tribute action to all victims, and in particular to André Marques, with the deposit of a crown of flowers at the bottom of the Walk of Glory, starting at 10:30.

Following the accident, the municipal leadership executive PSD/CDS-PP/IL approved measures to support victims and design a new technological system for the riser of Gloria, as well as the creation of a memorial on the Walk of Glory.

Over the past few months, opposition to the PSD/CDS-PP/IL governance has criticized the lack of information and answers about the accident with Gloria's elevator, with the PS talking about Carlos Coins adopting “a kind of damping tactic not to talk about it, to see if people forget”.

Lusa questioned the CML about when the memorial will be inaugurated in honor of the victims of the accident, and on which molds will be realized, but has not been answered so far.
