O announcement was made by the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, in a declaration to the country, without any questions, from the official residence, in São Bento, in Lisbon.
According to the Prime Minister, to “strengthen the response” to the crisis caused by increased cost of living, the Government today approved a number of measures.
Among the measures adopted is the allocation of an extraordinary supplement for pensioners with lower reforms, as it had been announced on 8 September, during the debate in Parliament on the motion of censure of the Aquis to the Government.
As already advanced by the Minister of Finance, Luís Montenegro explained that the extraordinary supplement “will be EUR 200 for those receiving a pension up to EUR 537.13” (the equivalent of an IAS), of EUR 150 for those receiving between EUR 537.13 and EUR 1,074.26 (the equivalent of between one and two IAS) and EUR 100 for those receiving between EUR 1,074.26 and EUR 1,611.39 (the equivalent of between two and three IAS).
“ It will be paid with the December pension and will cover more than two million pensioners”, he added.
In previous years, the support was granted by pensioners and not by pensioners, so those who received several pensions saw these sums added up to determine whether or not they were entitled.
According to a note published on the Government website, and similar to previous years, support “will not be considered for the purposes of the Solidarity Complement for the Elderly” (CSI).
The Government estimates to spend EUR 400 million on this measure and, as already transmitted by the Minister of Finance, the support will be paid between December 7th and 8th together with the pension of that month.
In the statement, the Prime Minister stated that the Portuguese day-to-day “is loaded by a legitimate and justified concern about the increase in the cost of living”, and, despite stressing that the country has no “influence on the origin of this crisis”, he acknowledged that it is felt “its impact”.
“ Therefore, and for everyone’s sake, we must balance social responsibility with financial responsibility,” he added.
In addition to the extraordinary supplement for pensioners, the Government has approved a number of other measures, including the bill to lower the IRS rates from 1st to 6th step, which will drop between 0.3 and 0.5 points and the extension of the green railway pass to the urban transport services of Lisbon and Porto, including the Fertagos line.
