O The Cape Verdean Government now offers five million escudos (EUR 46,000) for a 10% discount on the price of diesel for fishing, for three months, according to a resolution by the Council of Ministers.

“ It is appropriate to establish a temporary reduction in the price of special diesel for semi-industrial and industrial fishing, with funding provided by the Autonomous Fisheries Fund (FAP)”, states the resolution.

Between January and October, the price of this type of diesel practically doubled, from 78.2 to 153.3 escudos (from 0.71 to 1.39 euros).

The executive is therefore meant to justify a “10% reduction”, with funding provided by the FAP up to the overall limit of around EUR 46 thousand, “for the three-month period”.

According to the 2021 General Fisheries Census, 1,035 operators linked to semi-industrial and industrial fisheries are registered.

The corresponding financial compensation shall be paid by FAP directly to the fuel traders.

The President of the Association of Fishing Shipowners (ACFSP), Suzano Vicente, today welcomed the measure, despite considering it reduced, in statements to Radio Morabeza.

“ We wanted it to be more, but 10% of something is always better than 100% of nothing. We know about the economic and financial conditions of the country, so this reduction, even if it is little, is welcome”, he said.

The president of the Movement for Democracy (MpD, opposition in Cape Verde), Paulo Veiga, asked the Government at the beginning of the month to reactivate the mechanism applied by the former executive to limit fuel rises.

In the meantime, the government has announced that it is “working” in a way that stabilises fuel prices after a 12% increase in petrol and diesel in October in line with international markets.
