A 15 km reduction corresponds to minus two or three laps per race and follows the expected adjustments for next year in the fuel flow rules of the power units.
The decision was taken at a meeting in London, chaired by the Executive President of Formula 1, Italian Stefano Domenicali, and by the Director of Monoplaces of the International Automobile Federation (FIA), Nikolas Tombazis.
The commission also agreed to eliminate the three-hour limit between the start and the end of the races, which includes the interruption periods, maintaining a maximum of two hours of effective competition.
On the other hand, a time limit for the closure of any race activity will be established, allowing greater flexibility in the management of tests affected by rain or other incidents.
According to the organization, the goal is to “increase the possibility for viewers to watch the complete distance from the races when interruptions occur”. Free training sessions may also be extended more flexibly in these situations.
Another of the measures agreed for 2027 is the elimination of the type-approval of gearboxes in order to preserve the freedom of development of suppliers after consultation with manufacturers and recommendation of the Sports Advisory Committee.
Specific amendments to the 2026 sports and financial regulations and the 2027 technical regulation were also adopted at this meeting.
All changes will have to be ratified by the FIA World Motor Sport Council before they enter into force.
