O Union of Workers in the Industry of Hospitality, Tourism, Restaurants, and Similares do Sul denounced, on Tuesday, that the Hotel Miragem in Cascais will proceed with a collective dismissal of 140 workers, and that other 35 workers hired at term should also be leaving.

O News to Minutes is trying to contact the administration of the hotel unit for further clarification.

“The Union publicly denounces the intention of the Administration of the Hotel Cascais Miragem to move forward with a collective redundancy process that covers more than 140 effective workers, including 35 fixed-term workers, considering this decision deeply unfair and socially unacceptable“, can be read in the Union statement, to which the News to Minutes he had access.

To materialise, he explains, “this measure will have a strong social impact in the municipality of Cascais, directly affecting workers and their families who depend on employment to ensure their income and stability”.

Workers’ representatives recall that “The Cascais Miragem Health & SPA was acquired in 2025 by the Spanish group of Ibervalles and ARD Investment & Development, for about EUR 125 million, with an additional investment of about EUR 80 million planned for the refurbishment and repositioning of the unit.”.

“ We are therefore facing a global investment project of about EUR 205 million. It is in this context of an operation of enormous size that the Administration intends to justify the collective dismissal with the temporary closure of the hotel for the realization of the works ", can be read in the published note.

The Union still considers that this “option is profoundly unfair and disproportionate”: “It is not acceptable for workers and social security to bear the costs of a business decision when there are alternative solutions to ensure the maintenance of jobs during the period of closure and completion of works.”.

“This is not the final closure of a company for lack of activity. This is a hotel unit that will be the target of a significant investment, with a view to its refurbishment and subsequent reopening. In this context, we cannot fail to consider it unacceptable that the only solution offered to workers should be dismissal”, it can still be read.

Thus, “in the face of the seriousness of the situation, the Union has already requested, as a matter of urgency, meetings with various institutional and governmental entities, with the aim of promoting concerted intervention to find alternative solutions to collective dismissal and to safeguard jobs. The situation was also denounced to the Working Conditions Authority (ACT), and urgent inspective action was requested.”.

It also shows that “in the context of the information and negotiation meetings provided for in the Labour Code, the Union has requested the presence of DGERT and the Ministry of Labour”.

“ After the first meeting on 7 August, the next meeting will take place on 19 August, where the Union will again demand alternative measures to protect jobs. In the afternoon, there will be a plenary of Workers and a public action of complaint and protest, with distribution of a communiqué to guests and a press conference ", adds.
