News to Minutes

A Public Security Police (PSP) appealed this Wednesday to social networks to point out that “protecting those who have always cared for us is a duty of the whole community”, leaving various safety advice and self-protection behaviors to be taken to keep the elderly safe.

In the publication, the security force stated that “isolation and loneliness make the elderly population particularly vulnerable to fraud, theft and emergency situations,” adding that “the safety of our parents, grandparents and neighbors depends on our proximity and daily attention.”

But what are the recommendations?

As for street security, PSP advises:

  • “ Avoid carrying large amounts of money or wearing jewels, gold chains or objects of visible value;
  • Transport only the necessary money and keep it in places of difficult access;
  • When using the ATM, do not accept help from unknowns and cover the keyboard when entering the code;
  • Pay attention to people who approach with strange pretexts (ask information, sell something, etc.);
  • Do not share personal data with strangers;
  • Use comfortable and non-slip shoes and avoid wet, irregular or ill-lit walks;
  • If you feel followed or threatened, go to a public place and contact PSP”.

At home, we must pay attention:

  • “ Avoid loose or slippery carpets, use non-slip tape or remove them;
  • Keep the corridors and stairs well lit with accessible switches;
  • Do not leave electrical cables crossed on the ground or objects that may cause stumbles;
  • Always lock doors and windows, even when at home;
  • Don't open the door to strangers without confirming who they are;
  • Distrust those who present themselves as a company technician (water, light, gas) without prior notice – always confirm the identity with the company”.

And attention, seniors! There is also care to be taken to avoid ‘falling’ in scams. What does PSP see?

  • “ Distrust phone calls or unexpected visits that ask for money, valuables or personal data;
  • Never deliver money with the promise of a premium, treatment or “aid to family members”;
  • If someone says he is your family member or friend and is in trouble, confirm first through another contact;
  • Do not share bank information or code over telephone or internet;
  • If you have any questions, contact PSP (112 or local police station immediately)”.
