Aby the end of the year, India will provide Nepal with up to 600 megawatts of electricity for 18 hours a day, the Ministry of Energy announced.

“ This decision will help Nepal to meet its electricity needs during this difficult period and further strengthen the close and long-standing energy cooperation between India and Nepal,” he said.

The 26 August disaster, caused by the collapse of a glacier and rocks on the border between China and Nepal, caused more than 1,400 deaths in both countries.

Hundreds of workers from various hydroelectric projects are among the more than 5,300 people still missing in Nepal.

Under the agreement announced today, the volume of electricity to be supplied from January 2027 will be reassessed in December.

At the turn of the century, four out of five Nepalese had no access to electricity, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).

Since then, the construction of numerous dams has enabled the power grid to connect almost all 30 million inhabitants of the country.

Hydropower has also become one of the main engines of Nepalese exports to India and Bangladesh.

After last month's floods reached at least 12 hydroelectric projects, authorities suspended electricity exports.
