European Alliance of News Agencies asks Meta to remove clause that allows news gathering

The European Alliance of News Agencies (IANA) joined editors and media organizations to ask the technological giant Meta to remove the clause that allows us to track and collect journalistic content from their websites.

In a press release, available on the website, EANA asks Meta, owner of Facebook and Instagram, to remove the clause contained in its new commercial terms, replacing it with conditions that respect copyright.

“ The postponement of the implementation of these terms until 20 November should pave the way for genuine dialogue and for the search for coherent solutions that do not force the exit of media organizations from Meta platforms,” says the European Alliance of News Agencies.

“ This is not a matter for news agencies only,” said EANA’s Secretary-General Alexandru Giboi, quoted in a press release.

These new terms “will have harmful effects throughout the media ecosystem. Meta would have the content of all news organizations using Meta platforms served as a tray. This means that journalists from all over the world would work, in practice, for the Meta ", stresses the responsible.

This for the smaller media, “who already face enough difficulties”, continues.

“Our content is not only what finances our business”, but also what allows communities to have access to reliable information, and its production costs money, says Alexandru Giboi.

Therefore, “It is absurd for Meta to consider that the media can simply offer it for free. If reliable news organizations are removed from Meta platforms, where much of the public debate takes place, the space they leave will certainly not be empty. It will be filled by actors with unverified and manipulative content ", warns.

“ We are open to maintaining a constructive dialogue with the Meta and with all platforms on licensing models for the use of news content”, says the responsible.

EANA notes that media organisations, including their own members, oppose this measure of the Goal, and fully understand and support its position.

The World Association of News Editors (WAN-IFRA) also sent a letter to the Meta, in which it asked for the suspension, until 30 October, of the clause that would allow to track and collect journalistic content from media sites.
