Sthe older brother is often synonymous with take responsibility before their time. From an early age, the expectation that this must be the most responsible element, the example to follow and the support of the younger ones is still wrong. But who's his support?
These and other impositions can be viewed as an advantage, however, there is also the other side of the coin and, according to some psychologists to Huff Post all these requirements may end up turn into moments of pressure.
Aparna Sagaram, therapist of couples and families and owner of Space to Reflect, in Philadelphia explains that it is not co-inscience that younger brothers are, for this and other reasons, usually “much more relaxed and carefree.”.
This is what older brothers tend to mention more in therapy sessions
Fights with perfectionism
Altheresa Clark, clinical social worker and founder of Inspire4 Purpose in Florida describes that first-time parents end up making their first child a kind of guinea pig: “The older children usually need to deal with extreme parental styles, such as a rigid creation with many rules and expectations. So, as this falls on the older son, it makes him need to grow up in haste and generates many expectations.”
Development of Impostor Syndrome
When you're so self-critical, you can always look for more details you don't like, which can make it difficult to feel good enough and capable.
‘parenting’ experiences
In these situations, psychologists define that the oldest son, even if he is still a child, takes on the roles of an adult. According to Sagaram, many older children have been dealing with “parenting” since early. This means that they receive adult responsibilities, both to help with domestic and emotional work.
“Take care of the younger brothers, prepare their meals, put them to bed, take care of them” are some of the examples of parenting described by Sagaram.
Difficulty in asking for help
“Old brothers feel they cannot count on others for any kind of physical or emotional support and end up feeling that they need to solve everything on their own,” Sagaram explains.
In the long term, these experts explain that this affects both work, relationships and all areas of the life of the eldest son. “When I work with older children, it’s something we try to unlearn. Asking for help is acceptable; that does not mean it is weak at all ", concludes Sagaram.
