A israeli diplomacy confirmed an attempt at “terrorist attack” this morning, near the Israeli embassy in Belgrade, shortly after the announcement of the first results of the Israeli legislative elections.
“ We confirmed the information on an attempted terrorist attack near the Israeli embassy in Belgrade,” said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on social network X.
According to Israeli diplomacy, “the attacker was neutralized by the local police” and “no member of the embassy team was injured,” even because “the mission was closed at the time of the incident, which occurred late at night.”.
A young man armed with knives attacked a guard outside the Israeli embassy in Belgrade and was killed early this morning, the Serbian police and government reported.
Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said that the police are treating the incident as a “terrorist attack”, having raised the level of terrorist alert to the full and reinforced police presence in key locations.
The minister revealed that the aggressor was underage and had two knives and attacked the police member, shouting “Allahu Akbar”, or “God is great” in Arabic.
Dacic added that the police officer, who was slightly injured in the face, killed the attacker in self-defense.
Police photos taken at the scene showed a guard's cabin outside the embassy and the isolated area with police tape, as well as heavily equipped agents nearby.
The Serbian government believes that the aggressor was a native of the city of Sabac in western Serbia, still second Dacic. The Serbian ruler said that the country's security agencies were monitoring the aggressor, who, according to the minister, was a supporter of the Islamic State group.
Dacic also stated that the young man released the “black flag in support of the Islamic State in his Instagram account”.
In June 2024, an armed aggressor with a beast wounded a Serbian police officer in security service to the Israeli embassy in Belgrade. Also in this incident, the attacker was shot down by a Serbian guard.
The Israeli embassy is located not far from the United States Embassy in a noble district of Belgrade. The site is protected by an elite police unit, armed with automatic weapons.
This attack occurred after the release of the preliminary data of the legislative elections in Israel, which took place on Tuesday, placing the coalition of the current Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, ahead in the counting of votes.
Serbia has maintained close relations with Israel.
