O Kremlin expressed today hope that US President Donald Trump will continue his mediation efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine, despite the Democratic victory in the US mid-term elections.

“President Trump is still in office and we sincerely hope that he will continue his efforts for peace,” said Russian presidency spokesman Dmitri Peskov, quoted by a media agency close to the Kremlin.

The statements arise after the Democrats gained control of the Congress in the mid-term elections on Tuesday, removing from the Republicans the parliamentary majorities that supported Trump's legislative agenda during the first two years of the second presidential term.

The new composition of Congress, which will take office in January, will allow Democrats to influence budgetary policy and the adoption of legislation, as well as strengthen the supervision of the Republican administration.

Trump will, however, retain important foreign policy competences, including the conduct of the war-related diplomatic efforts in Ukraine.
