O minister of Housing, Miguel Pinto Luz, said today hope that the Arrive and the Socialist Party (PS) bring “good sense” to the meeting with the Government on housing.

“What do I expect? First, common sense. Then I'm not expecting them to agree with everything we've done, nor are they expecting us to be in agreement with everything they come to propose. It is part of the negotiation process, it is part of life”, said Miguel Pinto Luz today.

The ruler, who spoke to journalists in the House of Porto after signing several protocols, said there was an opening to dialogue with the opposition and that these were not meetings “suffering puppets just to deceive the Portuguese”.

Pinto Luz rejected the idea that he only decided to talk to protesters for housing today and ensured that in the last two and a half years, his ministry received “more than 350 entities linked to the housing area”.

“Of course we have divergent options and opinions, but we have to have the tolerance to listen and I am always available to listen. Now, one thing is certain: we are convinced that what we have implemented in recent years with the greatest investment ever in housing (...) is having an impact, but it takes time”, he added.

The Prime Minister announced on Tuesday that he will meet with the leaders of the Aquira and the PS in Saint Benedict next Thursday to hear his proposals on housing.

Luís Montenegro made the announcement in a declaration to the country from the official residence in São Bento (Lisbon), after weeks of demonstrations and so-called camped in Lisbon and Porto, which protest against the cost of housing and which have already generated several police loads.

The demonstration “is a mark of our freedom. I will not give up dialogue”

The President of the Republic, António José Seguro, once again called for “dialogue and common sense” as regards how to moderate demonstrations for the right to housing.
