A science station “Tara Polar Station”, with 12 people on board, left on July 19 of the city of Lorient, in the French region of Brittany, crossed Russian waters and had the path opened by a Chinese oceanographic icebreaker ship, before being trapped in the ice.
Thirty research centres from 12 countries have joined this expedition, which will study biodiversity and the influence of climate change in an ocean that heats three to four times faster than the rest of the planet.
The laboratory was designed to withstand sea ice pressure and withstand temperatures of -52oC.
