Children and adolescents accounted for 57% of the 476 patients hospitalized with dengue between 2023 and 2025 at the Agostinho Neto University Hospital (HUAN), the main public health unit in Cape Verde, according to a study published in the Public Health Bulletin.

A the highest concentration of hospitalizations occurred between july and october 2024, month in which there was a peak of hospitalizations.
Most patients, 78.4%, lived in the city of Praia, with higher concentration in the areas of Achadinha, Safende and Ponta d’Água.
Fever was the most frequent symptom recorded in 84.5% of cases, followed by nausea or vomiting, muscle and joint pain, abdominal pain and mucosal bleeding.
Almost all patients (99.2%) were discharged after stabilization, while four died.
The study recommends strengthening the monitoring of the disease before and during the rainy season (from July to November), especially in areas with the highest number of cases.
Among the suggested measures are also improved clinical records, early identification of patients at higher risk, especially children with fever, and increased capacity of health services in the periods of greater demand.
The analysis also recommends information campaigns with communities and new studies that also include cases of dengue that do not reach hospitals.
The most recent dengue epidemic in Cape Verde began in November 2023 and lasted until March 2025, affecting mainly the island of Santiago (where the capital, Praia) and the island of Fire is located.
In total, about 19,000 infections and eight deaths were recorded.
