Mariana Leitão spoke at the end of the work of the parliamentary days of the IL, in Porto, on the study commissioned by the government to a working group coordinated by economist Jorge Bravo to evaluate the sustainability of social security.
“The government ordered the study, paid for the study, waited a year and a half for the result and what did it do? When you received it, you packed it in a drawer and promised you wouldn't mess with the system during this legislature. He ordered the truth to then decide not to use it ", accused.
The IL leader stated that the conclusion of the working group, “not everyone likes to say it, but it’s obvious”: “The surplus that everyone was talking about is, in essence, an illusion.”.
For the president of the party, the country “can’t afford this”, because “who is today 20, 30 or 40 years old has the right to know, with real numbers, what system you can count on when your turn comes”.
Mariana Leitão argued that knowing this information about Social Security is “treating the Portuguese as adults” and that “what the government is doing is exactly the opposite”.
To close two days of parliamentary days centred on the need to reform the country, the president of IL defined that the party will focus in the coming months on presenting reforms for the State, Justice, pensions, taxes and Social Security.
“There is a party willing to do what others have put off for decades and to do so with concrete proposals based on successfully tested data in other countries and that we know they work and make a difference in people’s lives,” he stressed.
