Abbas Araghchi's visit takes place at a time of uncertainty in the conflict that has been opposing since February, the United States, Israel and Iran, after Tehran stressed this morning (local time) that it will not negotiate with Washington until its conditions are fulfilled.

The Iranian position arose in response to the statements of President Donald Trump, who said on Monday that he was available to dialogue with Tehran.

On Sunday, Araghchi said that the United States should return to the “commitments stipulated in the Islamabad Memorandum”, signed in June between Tehran and Washington, under Pakistan’s mediation, as a condition for Iran to reopen the Ormuz Strait, blocked since the beginning of the war on 28 February.

Since the beginning of the conflict, China has advocated a negotiated solution and made repeated calls for the end of hostilities and the beginning of dialogue between the parties, a position reiterated by the spokesperson of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Guo Jiakun.

Beijing repeatedly condemned the attacks of the United States and Israel against Iran, while calling for respect for the sovereignty and security of the Gulf countries with which it maintains close political ties.

The visit also coincides with the opening on Wednesday of the Xiangshan Forum, the main meeting of military diplomacy organized by China.

The instability in the Middle East and the blockade of the Strait of Ormuz should be among the topics under discussion at the meeting, together with the war in Ukraine and the technological and military competition between Beijing and Washington.
