Segundo local sources, these moments have been repeating in recent days in the production areas near the Messalo river, district of Macomia, where most of the residents of that area have been working.

“In Messalo’s production zone and here near the village, they have been circulating, so fear is greater,” said a village fountain.

On Sunday, the rebels ransacked a cornfield near the village of Nkoe, increasing the concern of the residents.

“ Where they looted corn is right near the village, so some had fled to New Zambézia ", reported another source.

In addition to Nkóe, the communities of Nguida and Nova Zambézia, Macomia, Chicomo and Meluco have been denouncing a constant rapprochement of the rebels especially in agricultural production camps.

Extremists of the Islamic State today claimed several attacks in the Macomia district, including clashes with the Defense and Security Forces. Through their propaganda channels, they claim to have beheaded a “Christian” during an attack on a village in Machonia.

The province of Cabo Delgado, northern Mozambique, rich in natural gas, has been facing an armed insurgency since October 2017 by groups associated with the Islamic State, which caused more than 6,600 deaths and 1.2 million displaced people, according to international organizations.

The neighbouring provinces of Niassa and Nampula have also recorded incursions by these groups since April last year.
