“ In tourism, 76 new establishments were registered, among accommodation units, restaurants and travel agencies. The approved investments are around 840 million meticals,” said Basil Muhate, during the opening of the II Session of the Coordinating Council of the Ministry of Economics in Maputo.
Taking stock of the first semester, the governor advanced that approved investments in the sector could also create about a thousand jobs.
“ More than increasing the number of establishments, it is important to ensure that these investments translate into effective economic activity, more tourists, employment and greater participation of national companies and communities in the value chain,” he said.
The Minister also stressed the creation of the National Agency for Tourism Development and Investment (Anditur), considering that it is an opportunity to strengthen the promotion and development of tourism in the country: “Its performance should be accompanied by concrete results in attracting investment, increasing the number of visitors, job creation and national participation in the value chain.”.
In the industrial sector, the minister advanced that production is estimated at around 60 billion methics (EUR 818.4 million) in the first half, with emphasis on food industries, base metals, beverages, non-metallic minerals and chemicals.
According to Basílio Muhate, three major industrial establishments were also licensed for graffiti processing, plastic packaging and corrugated paper production, as well as wood sawing and planing, with the potential to create 938 jobs in the provinces of Niassa and Sofala.
The minister also mentioned that 3,004 micro, small and medium enterprises benefited from training and assistance actions during the period under review and that 90 direct investment projects were approved, especially in the transport and communications, tourism and hospitality and industry sectors.
Muhate further advanced that preliminary data from the first half “point to a positive balance of the trade balance of around 114 million dollars, resulting from a 5% increase in exports and a 12% reduction in imports” and argued that the reduction in imports should be accompanied by the strengthening of national production capacity.
“ The reduction in imports should be accompanied by the strengthening of national productive capacity, allowing a growing share of domestic demand to be met by Mozambican production, with benefits for companies, employment and income”, he explained.
Muhate also reiterated the need to accelerate the diversification of exports and increase the added value of domestic products.
“ We need to increase the diversification of exports, the added value of national products and the participation of Mozambican companies in regional, continental and international markets,” he said.
