A ebola epidemic of faster spread of which there is record in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo is spreading rapidly beyond its epicenter, said Africa’s main health agency in its weekly ‘briefing’.

The province of Ituri remains the most affected, with more than 5,400 cases, while North Kivu has registered more than 1,000 cases since May.

In recent weeks, the number of new cases and deaths has decreased in the province of Ituri, epicenter of the outbreak, but has increased sharply in neighboring North Kivu and Upper Uele, indicated the African Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC Africa).

In eastern Congo it is spreading in extremely difficult conditions, aggravated by insecurity, displacement of populations, a strike by health professionals and intense population movements, warned.

The situation is particularly worrying in places where displaced persons are already living in extremely precarious conditions.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has stated that the epidemic remains out of control and is moving to overcome the one that hit West Africa between 2014 and 2016, the deadliest of which there is record, which has caused more than 11,000 deaths, especially in Guinea-Conakry, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Last month, DRCongo began to vaccinate health professionals and other workers in the front line with the Ervebo vaccine, which proved effective in previous Ebola outbreaks caused by a different and more common type of the virus, called Zaire.

Clinical trials are under way to find an authorised vaccine against Bundibugyo virus.
