André Sardet, artistic director of the festival, explained in statements to the agency Lusa that since he started organizing this event, he has been betting on the adoption of sustainability habits that this year are reinforced.

The municipality of Almada, and in particular the Costa da Caparica, recently experienced a crisis in the water supply that led to the autarchy to decree an alert situation in early July, extending until August 31.

In view of this situation and “the importance of responsible use of water resources”, the organisation of the Festival The Sol da Caparica integrated into the operation of the event a set of measures aimed at reducing the consumption of drinking water from the public network, while safeguarding the conditions of hydration, hygiene and safety in the enclosure”.

“ Since we started organizing The Sol da Caparica that we tried to leave sustainability habits ", said Sardet, advancing that this event does not cause disruption in the consumption of water in the territory, consuming 700 cubic meters in all four days, much of the watering of the park and that is currently off.

Among the measures now adopted, André Sardet explained, is the transport of non-drinking water to fill the ballasts of the structures, avoiding the use of the public network of Almada for this purpose.

On the other hand, the area will also have a larger number of chemical toilets and fewer network-connected sanitary facilities, whose autoclisms will use non-drinking water and sand bottles, which will result in savings of about one and a half litres per discharge.

Flow reducers will also be installed at different points and the number of free water distribution points will be adjusted and their use monitored to minimise waste while ensuring public access to drinking water.

The dishes used in the dining spaces of the teams and artists will be washed outside the municipality of Almada and the street food units present in the enclosure are mainly dedicated to the finalization and service of meals, maintaining only access to water strictly necessary to comply with the hygiene and food safety standards.

The organisation ensures that it will also raise public awareness of the responsible use of this resource, both inside and outside the premises, and is counting on these measures avoiding the consumption of more than 100,000 litres of drinking water from the public network during the four days of the festival.
