The Yemeni Houthis, anti-governmental fighters supported by Iran, today took control of the city of Mokha in the Red Sea, in a significant advance in its progress towards the narrow strategic of Bab el-Mandeb.

This passage, linking Asia to Europe through the Red Sea, has gained importance for oil trade since the start of the Middle East war due to the blockade of the Strait of Ormuz by Iran on the other side of the peninsula.

The Houthis announced in July a maritime blockade of Saudi Arabia and already attacked ships in the region.

The oil production of Saudi Arabia, which had recovered in July, declined slightly in August, according to the monthly report of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEP), today released.

The data shows the difficulties faced by the country in keeping production at high levels in the face of the Houthi attacks on its oil infrastructure and its ships in the Red Sea.

Hostilities between the United States and Iran have also intensified since August 30, increasing the risk for oil exports from the region.

American Energy Secretary Chris Wright told Bloomberg that just under 11 million barrels a day passed through the Strait of Ormuz.

In its monthly report, released on Wednesday, the United States Energy Information Agency (EIA) expects US reserves to remain at low levels and that “fuel prices will remain high” in the coming months.
