The Mexican state oil company Pemex and the Mexican authorities are making efforts to contain an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico from the company’s facilities on Friday.

O incident was detected on Thursday about 85 kilometres north of Ciudad del Carmen in the state of Campeche (east), the Permanent Observatory of the Gulf of Mexico reported.
“ A Pemex team has identified the leak in a pipeline and is making efforts to contain it,” said the Observatory, a government body, without specifying the extent of the oil spill.
The Mexican Navy is supporting the oil company in the containment and recovery of hydrocarbons at sea, with the mobilization of four vessels, two planes and 255 military.
The authorities estimate that the oil stain will move west in the next five days, with a reduced probability of “achieving the coast or a sensitive zone”.
Oil spills from Pemex facilities are frequent in this region and sometimes cause fires or damage to fishing communities. In February, an oil spill affected about 600 kilometers of beach.
Pemex faces a deep crisis marked by the decline in its production, lack of investment and a colossal debt.
