Spain recently passed a law that creates credits for each shipment of an electric car, which operators can then sell to oil companies – which would meet the carbon targets. In Portugal, a similar measure is at stake.

AND if the oil companies paid for the shipments of electric cars? This is in practice the effect that may have a decree-law approved in Spain about a week ago, on July 23rd. And Portugal may have a similar mechanism.
In practice, come create a credit system (e-credits), generated at each public load of an electric car. It provides that a renewable electricity credit equals 1 megawatt-hour of renewable electricity.
They shall be held by the operators of the loading stations, who can sell – for example, to suppliers of fossil or petroleum fuels. What's their interest in paying to buy them? Simple: this way, can meet the European Union’s emission targets of greenhouse gases, reads in the decree.
This is a measure that can promote the use of renewable energy in transporttransposing point 74 of the directive RED III adopted in 2023. And by selling the credits per load, the station operators will be able to lower the price for the end user and thus become cheaper to charge an electric vehicle. What, in turn, can generate interest in the change to this type of motorization.
The price of an e-credit is not yet set, the system will enter into force on 1 January. From the beginning of next year, renewable electricity credits will be available. The management will be carried out by the Secretary of State for Energy, which is the certification body.
What about Portugal?
Here in Portugal, on the table the Renewable Electricity Titlesprovided for in draft decree-law who was in public consultation until October last year. Similarly, these certificates may be sold by operators of oil loading stations.
Another figure that is already implemented are the Origin Guarantees, certificates that attest to the clean provenance of electricity.
