Omembers of the PS at the Assembly of the Republic Francisco César and Carlos Pereira today asked for the “urgent intervention” of ANACOM due to possible practices of “territorial discrimination” in telecommunications offers in the autonomous regions.

“ It is not acceptable for residence in the Azores or Madeira to constitute, by itself, an obstacle to access to the most competitive offers of the national market”, said Francisco César, quoted in a statement.

The Socialists sent a letter to the president to ANACOM – National Communications Authority asking the regulator to “deploy and correct possible territorial discrimination practices that prevent consumers from accessing low-cost telecommunications offers available on the continent”.

“ It is not a question of requiring privileged treatment for the Azores or Madeira, but of ensuring that the citizens of these regions are not harmed by the simple fact that they live there,” said Francisco César, who is also the leader of the PS/Açores.

Socialists refer to the example of offers marketed by WOO and UZO brands, expressing “concern” with “situations where operators have infrastructure to provide equivalent services through other brands, but with significantly higher prices”.

MEPs asked ANACOM to monitor “offer available in the autonomous regions” and “to require operators to state the differences identified” and “correction of practices that prove to be contrary to the law”.

“ The existence of an explicit legal provision on territorial non-discrimination requires supervision, decisions and concrete results”, concluded Francisco César.
