O Romanian President Nicusor Dan today held Russia responsible for the death of one person and the disappearance of three others on board an emergency vessel in the Black Sea.
“ This is clearly part of Russia’s escalation in the context of the war in Ukraine,” Nicusor said. Dan to journalists in Bucharest.
One person was found dead and three others are missing after a ship issued a distress call, the Romanian authorities said today, in a scenario marked by increased incidents at the sea Black related to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
“ The rescue boats were able to recover nine people with life and a body in the water,” the Romanian Naval Authority reported, adding that three crew members of the “Khoryv” freighter, who were in an emergency situation outside Romanian territorial waters, are missing.
The authority did not specify the reason for the rescue call made by the vessel.
The “Khoryv” is a cargo ship that sailed with the Comoros flag, according to the specialized portal VesselFinder. Com.
According to the Romanian authorities, the crew consisted of ten Ukrainian citizens and three Azeri.
The ship issued a distress signal around 10:00 (07:00 in Lisbon) when it was 13 nautical miles off the coast near the Romanian port of Constanta.
“ Due to adverse weather conditions and poor visibility, an air rescue operation by helicopter is unfeasible,” the Naval Authority indicated.
In the last three weeks, drones have hit several Merchant Navy ships on the Black Sea off the coast of Romania and Bulgaria, in full Russian-Ukraine conflict.
Last week, seven crew members disappeared on the Romanian coast after a drone attacked the Wine Trader, a chemical tanker that eventually burned down.
The fact was reported by Nicusor Dan, who called for the end of the attacks, which he considered unacceptable.
Romania has already asked NATO to supply more equipment to deal with the situation.
On Thursday, at the end of a meeting of the Supreme Council of National Defense, the Romanian Presidency stated that threats to freedom of navigation and infrastructure have increased considerably in recent times.
Member of NATO and neighbouring Ukraine, Romania is examining measures to speed up the development of maritime surveillance, the combating of marine mines and effective devices to neutralize drones entering national airspace and territorial waters without authorisation.
Over the past weekend, Romanian F-16 fighters shot down two drones over the Black Sea.
On Tuesday, NATO announced the shipment of additional aircraft, drones and radar systems to the Black Sea after the series of attacks on vessels.
