“In yesterday’s State of the Union speech [Wednesday], I made it clear that the European Union must continue to exert pressure on Russia by taking all possible measures to weaken its war machine”, declared the european leader through social networks.

Ursula von der Leyen added that the approval of the US bill sent a “clear message” in this sense.

The measure is named after Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, who died last July, and provides for sanctions against authorities, banks and strategic sectors of the Russian economy, as well as measures against the so-called “ghost fleet” of oil tankers used to circumvent restrictions.

Von der Leyen praised the “friend,” Senator Graham, for firmly believing that a specific and coordinated action “on both sides of the Atlantic could make a difference to end the war.”.

“ I hope that this important opportunity will be taken for peace,” the President of the European Commission stressed.

One of the central points of the legislation is the authorization for US President Donald Trump to impose tariffs up to 100% on leading Russian oil and gas buyers, a tool that can especially affect countries such as the People's Republic of China and India.

With the approval of the House, the project is now awaiting the signature of President Donald Trump.
