Odirect flights between Nacala, in northern Mozambique, and the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, start on Tuesday, announced today the President of Mozambique, Daniel Chapo, stressing that it is another result of travel and diplomacy.

“ We work to transform this Mozambique with concrete actions that will transform Nacala, transform Nampula, transform our entire country. That is why next Tuesday, October 27, will land at our airport (Nacala Airport) the first international connection through Ethiopian Airlines ", said Mozambican President.

The head of the state spoke in the city of Nacala, Nampula province, north of the country, at the opening of the first edition of the Conference on Addition of Value based on Minerals and Energy Resources available, organized by the Government, in which he announced the direct air link between Nacala and the capital of Ethiopia.

“ From Tuesday, three times a week, anyone who wants to travel to the world can leave from Nacala. You don’t need to go to Maputo, you don’t need to go to Johannesburg, but from Nacala you have a direct flight to Addis Ababa and from there to Dubai, Portugal, India, China, anywhere in the world,” he said.

Chapo said that the city of Nacala is a point of convergence and with potential in various resources, and is now being projected worldwide, explaining that air connectivity is important for the businesses that are intended.

“ And this flight, from Tuesday, results from our trips to Ethiopia, and we will continue to go and we will continue to travel to bring more benefits to the Mozambican people”, said the head of the state.

In June, the government had foreseen that the air link between Mozambique and Ethiopia would begin the following month, with the opening of the route resulting from the closed understandings during the visit of Mozambican President Daniel Chapo to Ethiopia in April, in the framework of efforts to strengthen economic and trade cooperation between the two countries.

On that occasion, the Head of State announced negotiations with Ethiopian Airlines to expand air links between the two countries, including the creation of the route to Nacala and the increase in frequencies for the city of Beira, in central Mozambique.

The agreement signed at the time also indicated that that Ethiopian airline would move from five to seven weekly flights to Beira, also strengthening the link between Mozambique and one of the main air transport centres on the African continent.

Daniel Chapo then argued that the new links between Mozambique and Ethiopia should facilitate the mobility of entrepreneurs and investors and boost strategic sectors such as tourism, trade, logistics, energy and infrastructure.

“ We also want to open in Nacala, which means that our entrepreneurs if they want to fly to Mozambique, to Maputo, from Addis Ababa, they can fly at any time, to Beira can fly at any time and to Nacala, in no time, they can also fly at any time,” said Mozambican President, predicting the implementation of the agreements by July.
