A singer Bonnie Tyler was admitted to Faro Hospital in the Algarve for several months. He died this Thursday. According to information shared by a friend of the family and the artist's official website, there will have been an intestinal perforation resulting from an appendicitis. After surgery, the singer was in a coma for a while. Already this June it was revealed that she was still hospitalized, very weakened, but already out of the coma.

Bonnie Tyler: The state of health in recent months

Intestinal perforation due to appendicitis may have ended up worsening Bonnie Tyler's health. On the Terra Brasil website, co-proctologist Danilo Munhoz explained what may have happened to the singer.

“Intestinal perforation occurs when there is a rupture in the intestinal wall. This opening allows bacteria and intestinal contents to pass into the abdominal cavity, which causes intense inflammation and risk of generalized infection”, the doctor said.

The abdominal area is not prepared to receive the intestinal contents outside the intestine which may lead to and increase the risk of infection. It also explains that if it is not treated properly it can progress to more severe conditions and compromise several organs.

Danilo Munhoz also mentioned the possible symptoms of intestinal perforation. “Usually, the patient has very strong and sudden abdominal pain, as well as abdominal distension, fever, nausea and malaise. In many cases, a person realizes that something is very bad because pain tends to get worse quickly.”

Treatment and worsening of symptoms

From severe pain, abdominal distension, high fever, nausea, vomiting and general feeling of malaise are some of the signs you should be aware of. “The bowel can pierce for different reasons. There are situations where there is weakening of the intestinal wall by inflammation or infection, and also cases related to aging and existing diseases”, continues.

As for treatment, surgery is always necessary. “The surgery is necessary to control abdominal contamination and correct the affected area. Depending on the severity, the patient may need intensive care, venous antibiotics and strict follow-up in the following days.”

The adaptation of the intestine may take a few months and in the case of Bonnie Tyle the situation may have been aggravated also due to the age of the artist. The body eventually responds slower and delays the whole process.

“ In older patients, attention needs to be even greater because the body tends to respond slower. Therefore, recognizing the symptoms early and seeking care quickly makes all the difference in prognosis”, explains Danilo Munhoz.
