Ddepending on your group of friends and family, it is possible that a lot of the people you know still have Facebook account to continue having notifications about birthdays. Well, it looks like a new WhatsApp update might implement this social network functionality.
According to wABetaInfo website, the 2.26.27.3 update of the beta version of the app for Android makes it clear that this feature is in development.
“WhatsApp is developing a new section that shows when a contact’s birthday is coming”, can be read in the publication. “ The update will make it easy for users to keep up to date with contact anniversaries directly through WhatsApp. When it’s someone’s birthday, users can receive a notification directly through the app.”.
It is good to remember that WhatsApp already requires users to enter the date of birth, with the information to be used only to comply with local laws regarding the use of messaging apps. However, it seems that this information will not be used in this new feature.
Allegedly, anniversaries information will be removed from phone contacts, which means that WhatsApp will only be able to submit notifications if users have previously entered the anniversaries of their contacts. The goal, apparently, is to protect the privacy of users.
“Everything works on the device itself. You are the one who decides whether to record the birthday of a contact on the phone”, explains WABetaInfo. “ As a result, that decision is entirely yours. If you do not want WhatsApp to display the anniversary date of a specific contact, simply do not record the birthday in the contacts”.
It is not yet known when this feature will be available for WhatsApp but, since it is still in development, it is likely that it will take some time before we have news about a release in a future update.
