O performance of students of the 4th and 6th years Portuguese and Mathematics improved slightly compared to last year, according to the results of the Learning Monitoring (ModA) tests, released today.
This year the schools held 514,402 ModA tests – 246,073 in the 4th year and 268,329 in the 6th year – and almost five months later, the results finally reached the teachers and students.
As the second year of application of these tests, schools can for the first time evaluate the evolution of their students' performance and, on average, this development was positive.
In a statement, the Institute of Education, Quality and Evaluation (EduQA) points out “mild improvements in several of the literature evaluated, in view of the results of 2025”.
Mathematics, for example, average points (on a scale of 0 to 100 that measures proficiency and not the percentage of right answers) increased from 50.9 last year to 52.5 in the 4th year, an evolution identical to that of the 6th year, in which the average went from 51.3 to 52.3 points.
In Portuguese, the performance of the students remains slightly lower, but with more significant improvements compared to the previous year: in the fourth year the average score went from 47.4 to 50.0 (plus 2.6) and in the sixth year the increase was from 2.9 points, from 45.0 to 47.9.
The EduQA also highlights the comparison of the performance of students who took the Portuguese Non-Maternal Language test (level 2) in 2025 and this year.
In the interaction and oral production, the average increased 5.4 points to 52, with an even greater improvement in the interaction and production of written utterances, whose average increased from 43.3 to 55.4 points (more 12.1).
In addition to Portuguese and Mathematics, this year the students also held Artistic Education in the 4th year and English in the 6th year, under the model of rotating assessment areas. By 2025, the areas of English in the 4th year and History and Geography of Portugal in the 6th year had been evaluated.
The results are made available through reports addressed to schools, students and those responsible for education.
The information available allows us to identify the strengths and areas of improvement of each student and, for schools, allows us to support pedagogical decision making and the definition of strategies adjusted to the students' realities and needs.
Unlike last year, and the government's intention, the results of the 2025/2026 evaluations were only made available after the beginning of the school year.
In early October, the Minister of Education, Science and Innovation justified the delay with the problems recorded in the digital classification process of secondary education exams, which monopolized the efforts of EduQA teams.
Regardless of this embarrassment, the minister admitted the need for more time to work the data and said that, therefore, the schedule of the ModA tests should be anticipated, starting in April, and not at the end of May.
