New York Marathon
O the Swedish Andreas Almgren won the New York Marathon today in her debut in the distance, while Kenyan Sheila Chepkirui added the second triumph on the female side after that reached in 2024.
In his first presence in New York City, Almgren recorded the third fastest time in the 50 years of the race, completing the course at 2:06.01 hours.
The success of the 31-year-old Swedish in his marathon debut is after he broke the 10-kilometre European record in January, winning in August his first international track title in the 10,000 metres of Birmingham's European Championships, and having been a sacred half-marathon world champion in September.
The Italian Yemaneberhan Crippa, winner of the Paris Marathon in April, was second (2:06.14 hours) ahead of Kamohelo Mofolo of Lesotho (2:06.26), who beat the previous champion Benson Kipruto in the fight for the last place of the podium.
Today, the times of the top seven ranked even entered the top ten best records of this marathon, according to the accounts made by the American Associated Press agency.
Before Almgren became the first male athlete to win in the New York Marathon debut since Ethiopian Gebre Gebremariam in 2010, Sheila Chepkirui had celebrated her second victory in three years.
The Kenyan, who raced in 2:24,36 hours, beat American Jessica McClain (2:24,42), who surpassed the previous title holder a few meters from the arrival.
So Kenyan Hellen Obiri, champion last year and in 2023, had to settle for third place, one second from silver.
