Nine signs you're drinking too much water. Yeah, it could hurt
Drinking water is probably the most frequent recommendation of nutritionists and health professionals, since it is absolutely vital for our body to function properly. And it is – unless you drink too much. Although most people take care of the signs of dehydration, excess hydration is equally dangerous.
Drinking too much water can result in water poisoning, also known as hyponatremia, causing a flood inside the cells due to abnormally low levels of sodium in the bloodstream. In severe cases, water poisoning can lead to debilitating health problems such as seizures, coma and even death.
The Healthy listed nine signs that you're drinking too much water:
Never leave the house without a bottle of water: If you load your water bottle all day and fill it immediately when it's over, you may be drinking too much water. Constant addition of water to the body can result in low levels of sodium in the blood, which can cause all the cells in the body to swell.
Drink water even when you're not thirsty: The best way to know if your body really needs more water is to be aware that it feels thirsty or not.
Drink water until the urine is clean: If you are drinking a healthy amount of water, the colour of the urine should be from ‘ straw colour’ to transparent yellow. Although most people believe that clear urine is the healthiest sign of hydration, having urine without pigmentation can be a sign that you are drinking too much water.
Urine during the night: Waking up often in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom is a sign you're drinking too much water. Most people pee between six and eight times a day.
You feel nauseous and have vomiting: The symptoms of hyperhydrate are similar to those of dehydration. You may experience nausea vomiting and diarrhoea.
She has throbbing headaches throughout the day: Headaches are a sign of hyperhydration and dehydration.
Swelling or discoloration in hands, lips and feet: In many cases of hyponatraemia, people check perceptible swelling or discoloration in their hands, lips and feet. When all the cells in the body swell, the skin also begins to swell visibly.
Weak muscles that tend to cramp easily: Having a healthy and fully functional body has everything to do with balance. When you drink too much water, your electrolyte levels drop and that balance is compromised. Low electrolyte levels can cause a number of unpleasant symptoms, including muscle spasms and cramps.
Fatigue: The kidneys are responsible for filtering the drinking water and ensuring that fluid levels in the bloodstream remain balanced. When you drink too much water, your kidneys need to work even harder, creating a reaction that puts your body in stress and fatigue.
