Tcoffee and tea contain plant compounds with potential health benefits, including some that may help in liver health.
Although no drink alone will completely alter the health of the liver, the truth is that it can influence it.
Nutritionists have revealed to EatingWell how coffee and tea affect the functioning of this organ.
How Coffee Affects Liver Health
Studies suggest that coffee can contribute to liver health by reducing inflammation and the risk of liver disease.
These benefits exist in both decaf and normal versions.
“Coffee contains many compounds, such as caffeine, chlorogenic acids and other compounds of plant origin, which may have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antifibrotic effects, which may help explain why coffee consumption may be positively associated with liver health,” says nutritionist Alexander LeRitz.
Other bioactive polyphenols present in coffee may improve insulin sensitivity and influence liver fat metabolism, reducing fat production and increasing its use.
How tea affects the health of the liver
Regular tea consumption may be associated with lower inflammation of the liver and a lower risk of severe liver disease. The bioactive compounds of tea, particularly catechins, have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that contribute to liver health.
Preliminary research suggests that the effect of tea on liver health may vary according to the type of tea, and unfermented green tea provides more antioxidants. In addition, fermented green tea can positively influence fat accumulation in the liver.
Green tea, in particular, has been studied for its effects on liver health.
Coffee or tea: What's best for liver health?
Both coffee and tea can be beneficial to the health of the liver, but experts say that coffee may have an advantage given the scientific evidence about its consumption.
However, Andrews recommends choosing the drink he likes most, since both can ultimately contribute to liver health. It is important that you adopt a healthy lifestyle, avoiding alcohol consumption and favoring a balanced diet and physical exercise.
