A Committee of the Professional Journalist Wallet (CCPJ) did not propose the extinction of emoluments, said the Minister of the Presidency, António Leitão Amaro today, but it dishonored journalists to bear the cost of stronger self-regulation.

The ruler spoke in the parliamentary committee of Culture, Communication, Youth and Sport, in the framework of a regimental hearing.

“ We have not yet discussed with the Wallet Committee the decision on the extinction of emoluments, it is controversial and the proposal of the Wallet Committee does not foresee this”, said Leitão Amaro, when questioned on the subject.

Of course, “it dishonors journalists to bear the cost of a stronger self-regulation, with more technical leaders, with leaders in full time,” he continued.

And therefore, “we can safely have a stronger self-regulation funded with public resources, not with emoluments,” he said.

The Wallet Commission “did not propose the extinction of emoluments”, because it considers it a normal situation with its self-regulator, as with other associations or self-regulation organisations.
