“ Mit'll have to be done sooner or later. Perhaps it is still a bit premature, because there are still pieces that are, in the background, still wanting to start working,” said Nazaré da Costa Cabral, who spoke to journalists in the interval between the presentation of the CFP report on the performance of the SNS in the last year.
According to the document, the SNS had a deficit of EUR 1,035 million in 2025, a “significantly higher than expected” in the State Budget for 2025, which was EUR 217 million.
Nazaré da Costa Cabral stressed that it is not up to the Public Finance Council to evaluate public policy, but to contribute, with the quantitative information it discloses, to “a culture of formulation and design of public policies based on evidence [information]”, but to avoid “distorted images” of reality.
“ The great challenge is to adjust the resources that exist and those that we will have in the coming years, not only financial resources, but also human, technical and technological resources and how we will reorganize these resources in the face of the evolution of needs,” he said, adding that “it is up to decision-makers to look at this very seriously (...), making a very clear identification of priorities and the projection of all these variables”.
