Christa Pike, the American inmate sentenced to the death penalty in Texas who survived two lethal injections, is already able to walk alone and is improving her speech ability.

The information was shared by the lawyer to TMZ magazine, realizing that Christa Pike, 50, “is showing a significant recovery”, although doctors are still evaluating the extent of any permanent psychological or cognitive damage.

The lawyer said this diagnosis might take a while.

Pike was sentenced to the death penalty for the murder of Colleen Slemmer, a 19-year-old colleague of the Job Corps vocational training programme in Knoxville in 1995.

The execution was scheduled for September 30, and although it was still postponed about an hour, it actually happened. The inmate remained awake, spoke and sang with the spiritual guide after the start of the drug administration and, after the first dose, continued to move and breathe audibly.

According to witnesses, Pike was alive and making noises even after the second attempt at lethal injection, being transported by ambulance from prison.

The inmate was hospitalized for almost two weeks. The doctors even declared brain death, however, Pike became conscious and spoke again the next day.

“On Monday night, we had understood that Christa was brain dead and that life support would be withdrawn the next day,” lawyer Randy Spivey said at a press conference. “But on Tuesday, for everyone’s shock, Christa woke up and started talking.”

On October 10th, Christa was discharged and returned to the prison facility.

Pike waited 30 minutes for the emergency services

According to calls made to line 991 (112), there was some confusion between telephone operators, rescuers and prison officials about the legitimacy of the request for emergency medical assistance in the execution chamber.

According to the Associated Press (AP), which obtained the telephone recordings, the first call made to the plant took place at 8:40 p.m. on September 30, shortly after the start of the 50-year-old Pike execution.

The person who contacted the emergency line would not have been able to provide a code to help verify the legitimacy of the request.

“ According to our supervisors here at the Department of Emergency Communications (DEC), we were informed that it was a joke”, said an operator, at 9:03 p.m.

It was only half an hour later, around 9:11 p.m., that prison officials were able to confirm that it was a real occurrence and then began to allow emergency services to enter the prison.

What happens now?

A failed execution in Tennessee state opened an unprecedented scenario in the United States and raised numerous questions about the case. First of all, whether the sentence of the death penalty is still in place or whether, for example, it can face a second execution.

According to various international media, Christa Pike's sentence is still in force even though execution is suspended. Now, according to article 40-23117 of the Tennessee Code, which points out what happens when a person sentenced to the death penalty is not executed “for any reason”, “the sentence is still in force and must be executed by the court in which the prisoner was tried,” states the American People magazine.

Note, however, that for now there is no new date set for the execution of Pike. It should also be remembered that Tennessee governor Bill Lee suspended all executions scheduled for this year, and even requested an investigation into an “exhaustive” investigation into Pike’s failed execution.

Christa Pike waited 30 minutes for assistance after unsuccessful execution

Christa Pike, the prisoner sentenced to the death penalty and who survived two lethal injections, waited about half an hour until medical assistance was provided after the unsuccessful execution. At the first call, the operators of the emergency plant thought it was a “play”.
